Laban Movement Analysis Cards

You can make a Dance

out of anything

Discover how you can easily create dance games, dance motifs and choreographies with small and large people, so that you have a treasure box full of ideas that you can use in your dance lessons for a lifetime.

Explore Labans Dance Themes

The LET'S make a DANCE Card Set enables dance teachers and children to completely immerse themselves in the world of dance and to understand Laban’s dance themes. Linking theory and practice, the cards capture diverse qualities of dance movement on paper.

Whether they get excited about peacocks fanning their tails, playing hopscotch or floating astronauts – children love pictures and like to explore their environments. So discovery learning is naturally applied here as a method of teaching.

Play with various learning styles in your dance lessons

Through the use of the cards various learning styles come into play: visual – by looking at the cards; aural and verbal – by talking about the content they show; and kinesthetic – by independent movement exploration to try out what they show.

In this way, an interconnection between physical and mental processes is playfully achieved during dance classes and the whole person gains a deep understanding. Individual movement experience becomes integrated with imagery and simple symbols accompany creative development.

“Despite the complexity of movement knowledge, a childlike lightness prevails in the illustration, which totally captivates me in my curiosity and joy of movement as a dancer and dance teacher.”

Matthias Markstein, Danceteacher

Why I created this card set

Perhaps you are wondering why I developed this extraordinary set of cards? During my training as a CLMA, I found all these symbols just fantastic!

I had an incredible amount of fun learning all these hieroglyphs and playing with them. They gave me clarity in dance and, above all, a huge joy in expressing my creativity through dance. But... my fellow students were completely different! They struggled to learn these curious signs and prepare for the upcoming test. Oh dear, many saw black!

As always with the birds awake in the morning, I started the day with drawing and put on paper what felt coherent: a symbol and an explanatory image to create a better connection to the brain. Every morning I drew ... and brought my sketches to my fellow students. They were amazed - even the trainers.

Then I was asked for sets, for learning, playing and creating - because it was suddenly much easier to make connections in the brain to these symbols.

The prototype of this card set was born during my training as a CLMA and soon became one of the most popular teaching materials, also among internationally renowned dance teachers, CLMAs and dance therapists.

It has always been important to me that it is easy to immerse yourself in the language of dance and that it also has a certain precision and is not "usigusi", as my best friend would say.

Dance takes place on so many levels and everyone has a different approach to dance, as I have found out over many years in my classes with children.

The teaching material offers a wealth of opportunities to live out one's own creativity and to give small and big people a structure in which they can develop, combining mental and physical processes - after all, we are not cephalopods.

What others say

Jenneke van Geest

CLMA & Dance and Movement therapist

“Stefi’s dancecards are made with much detail, bright colours and very clear, illustrative drawings (all hand made!!!) that guide you very playfull through the Laban and Bartenieff elements. She’s added to every card not only a drawing, but also the Laban motif symbol and additional name, which makes it a very complete set to work and practice with.

I recommend this to every practicioner in educational, health and art settings who work with dance, movement with people of all ages. It provides you a nice structure and inspiration to work around LBMA movement categories, do a choreography with a selection of the cards, learn the symbols in a playfull manner or just provide your students/clients with beautifull images to be inspired to dance wild and freely!

Thank you Stefi for all the effort you’ve put into this! Keep up the good work!”

Bettina Rollwagen

CMA (Certified Movement analyst)

“Your cards are very loving and are what Warren Lamb would have greeted with a kiss on the hand.“

Anne Green Gilbert

Author the book »Creative Dance for All Ages« & »Brain-Compatible Dance Education«

“I really appreciate your inclusion of the BrainDance patterns. I think your illustrations of the concepts are so illustrative – they really visualize the terms extremely well. I love the motif symbols on the people! Well done! I wish you all the best!”

Jennifer Bär

CLMA & Tanztherapeutin

“A really wonderful set of cards that I always enjoy working with in my classes. The little ones (4-6 year olds) love the drawings and the older ones are already working on little choreographies with several cards.

The drawings are easy to understand for children and are not too childish for adults either.

Thanks to Stefi Schmid for taking the effort to put Laban on cards! A must have for all dance teachers.”

Danceteacher

“Dear Stefi, I love working with cards in class and so it's great that you've done this incredible work to create them. I think that's what was missing to help children visualize, understand and experience diversity. I think we will have a lot of fun with it. Thank you very much.”

Kirsten Ueberricke

Danceteacher

“Laban's teaching methods are incredibly fascinating and up-to-date. The cards with the motifs are so lively and varied - and I can use them in my lessons with great pleasure. I have the cards in a box, which are just as important to my teaching as my music.

In other words, and this makes me particularly happy, pictures still generate a lot of creativity. No cell phone can do that. I need a framework for my lessons, which I now have. Thank you very much.”

Helga Chernenilov

Dance teacher, music teacher and educator

“Thank you for the many practical dance games that can be put directly into practice.

After many years of teaching, this knowledge helps me to remain open and flexible and to convey something to the students that I have lost sight of.

I now also have a real treasure trove of possible combinations. Your work has heart and mind - THANK YOU, I am happy to recommend you to others.”

Christiane Kutzer

Danceteacher for children

“I am impressed by how great games can be used to teach children how to dance and that they appeal to all the senses.

The cards are great for your own dance lessons with children because they are visual and memorable for the children.

The present with ideas from Stefi contains great suggestions that can be used in ever new combinations. It is worthwhile.”
